Happy Gilmore is back! Adam Sandler’s iconic character is returning in Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix. The film debuts on July 25.Â
Happy Â
The original Happy Gilmore opened in 1996, nearly 30 years ago. The film was a modest success at the time. But over time, as it attracted more fans on VHS and cable, it grew into a cultural phenomenon.Â
In 1996, Sandler was yet the A-lister he is today. The character, a former hockey star, who decides to try his luck as a golfer, has helped to define the career of Sandler. The lovable loser, who struggles with growing up, would become the kind of role that the comedic icon would be known for.Â
The comedy is known worldwide for Gilmore’s fight with Rob Barker. It also features Carl Weathers as the one-handed Chubbs. Plus, it includes one of cinema’s greatest villains, Shooter McGavin.Â
Happy II Â
Returning cast members for the long-awaited sequel include Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller, and Christopher McDonald. While new additions include Benito Antonio MartÃnez Ocasio (aka Bad Bunny) and Sandler’s daughters, Sadie and Sunny Sandler.Â
Sequels, especially with this long gap in time, aren’t always a sure thing. For the most part, they tend to disappoint fan bases.Â
Sandler isn’t someone who has made a lot of sequels, despite having a lot of hit projects that would easily warrant them. Waterboy comes to mind as a film he has yet to revisit. So, the fact that he is making another Happy Gilmore film seems like a sign he has a good story to tell.Â
Adam Richard SandlerÂ
Adam Richard Sandler was born on September 9, 1966, in Brooklyn, New York. Sandler used his school days to display his comedy skills and antics. He was not great at school, but he was great at making schoolmates laugh. He started to focus on performing, including acting and standup comedy.Â
After high school, Sandler took classes at the Lee Strasberg Theater & Film Institute in New York City. He also attended the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. He would graduate in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in acting.
SNLÂ
The comedian would make his debut on SNL in 1990. Sandler would quickly become the star of the show during his stint. He worked with other famous comedians like Chris Farley and Chris Rock while on Saturday Night Live. Sandler would create some of the most memorable SNL characters while he was on the show.Â
Incredibly, Sandler was actually fired from SNL in 1995, due to low show ratings. Despite being fired, he is still considered one of the all-time great Saturday Night Live cast members. Â
Netflix Â
